Shirasuna is one of five fictional freshwater studies in the KSK BAITS Japanese Freshwater Field Guide Collection. Its Japanese title, 白砂の合流, can be rendered as “White-Sand Confluence.” The plate brings an imagined meeting of waters into the visual language of a vintage natural-history archive.
01 / UPPER DETAILS
Where the currents meet.
Blue arrows travel through fine, curved lines around an illustrated junction. To the right, a branching river drawing introduces a darker band of blue, while small symbols and a compass-like mark give the page the appearance of a carefully arranged field document. These are elements of the artwork, not a navigational map.
02 / THE CENTRAL STUDY
A quiet, mottled presence.
The central fish gives the composition its weight. Its broad, flattened outline is filled with mottled gray-brown markings, with delicate lines defining the fins and tail. The surrounding pale space makes this large specimen the first detail to notice before moving into the smaller studies.
03 / THE LOWER ARCHIVE
There is more below.
Five fish illustrations sit in a horizontal row. Four plant studies follow, each with its own silhouette. At the bottom, an illustrated riverbed cross-section connects the page’s surface observations with the world beneath the water.
